Anne K. Taylor Fund
No hunting is legal in Kenya, even on a subsistence basis. However, bushmeat and other poachers kill tens of thousands of animals each year, a level of hunting that is wholly unsustainable. Illegal snaring is indiscriminate and impacts all species including hippo, elephant, lion, leopards, giraffe, antelopes, wildebeest, zebra and baboons. In addition to poaching, there are growing conflicts between the Masai people and wildlife. Predation on Masai livestock by leopard and lion is not generally tolerated and subsequent retaliatory killing is a major challenge to the co-existence of people and wildlife. Paradoxically, the Masai’s primary income is from tourists who come to view the wildlife.
To address these threats the AKTF community based conservation programs fall into four categories: 1) Anti-Poaching/Snare Patrols; 2) Wildlife Rescues; 3) Community Education and Support; and 4) Micro-Finance enterprises. The Anne K. Taylor Fund (AKTF) works with the authorities in the Masai Mara to help control bushmeat poaching and conducts community education programs on the importance of saving wildlife. The aim of the AKTF Micro-Finance project is to provide economic opportunities for the Masai to ensure sustainable communities and businesses.
A group of Masai women bead beautiful and sophisticated Certified Wildlife Friendly® bracelets and other products that are sold in Kenya and the USA on their behalf with all profits being returned to the women. With their initial profits the women have invested in a grain-grinding machine that grinds maize into maize-meal which is their staple food. The women also lease out the machine to other members of their community, thus ensuring themselves a steady income. In addition they have been able to build a small shop to supply basic necessities to their outlying communities. As sales and profits increase, other business opportunities will present themselves, thus empowering these wonderful women and their families.
