Himalayan Bio Trade

logoHigh in the Himalayan Mountains, Grey Wolves, Himalayan Tahrs, Leopards, Musk Deer, Pangolins, Red Pandas, and Wild Yaks are threatened due to loss of habitat and poaching, but Himalayan Bio Trade is working to actively protect these species.

Himalayan Bio Trade Private Limited (HBTL) is a consortium of community based forest products enterprises in Nepal. The communities have gained tenure over forest habitat and work to conserve and improve the ecosystem’s unique biodiversity and protect the wildlife. HBTL and its community enterprises have received Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for their well managed forests, Cradle to Cradle certification for their progressive production processes, as well as organic certification.

HBTL promotes responsible resource management that protects endangered species and maximizes benefits to the communities, while producing the highest quality natural products – essential oils, herbs, handmade lokta bark paper products, Himalayan nettle cloth bags, and fuel efficient briquettes. HBTL paper products have been featured in Aveda’s holiday gift boxes and their essential oils are blended into personal care products in Europe.

Since 2007, Aveda has featured handmade Lokta bark paper from HBTL in its Holiday Line. While beautifully showcasing the Aveda products, this exceptionally durable and attractive paper, harvested in a sustainable manner in the Himalayas, is helping marginalized community groups successfully fight poverty and improve their standard of living.
